It's the correct thing to do.

I think if someone has taken the time and made the effort to do something nice it's only polite to thank them properly. If it was mailed they may wonder if it was even received if not acknowledged.

We raised our children with the "if someone took the time, money, hassle and expense selecting a gift, then wrapped it, mailed it etc. Then you can take a few minutes to thank them, put a stamp on it and mail it. I've had it with the ungratefuls in our life .No more gifts.

95% of the time. It is good practice, and means more. The lazy way out is well.. just that. I feel if I can go, buy a gift, take it home, wrap it and ship it or present it, or do something special, that least that is warranted is a thank you note. don't save your paper and 55 cents! How cheap!

It's nice to know that someone's thoughtfulness is appreciated, after all, they didn't have to do whatever it is they done for me in first place. I'm glad to know someone cares et a thank you card is albeit small in return, but big in reciprocation/acknowledgement.

There is no replacement for a handwritten thank you card and is it really a big thing to ask when someone has gone out of their way to spend money and/or time on you? My children know they are expected to write a card when they receive a gift and they do it happily. It helps them develop gratitude

A previous commenter said it all: good manners never go out of style. A hand-written note or letter is just classy, and shows effort. And an email is acceptable over a text.

I get great pleasure out of doing something more than an email.

It's what you are supposed to do. If the gift is a big item I will get a special card.

Notice that people have baby and wedding showers, with a friend sitting next to them writing down who gave what. What's that for if they have no intention of sending out thank you's? Hypocrites.

Sending thank you cards is a class act. And it's always nice to receive them. Spend the extra 5 minutes and make the world a nicer place.

Because people need to know you appreciate the time, effort and money they put into your gift or work they did for you.

It's common courtesy. It's polite. It's how I was raised. Why would you not send a thank you card? Besides the Post Office needs our help.

I don't want gifts. I don't accept gifts most of the time, and say so. When they are forced on me, I say thank you and don't get me anything anymore.

I express my gratitude verbally in person or a phone call, or via text, email or private messages. Save paper and postage.

Sometimes thank yous mean more if you take the time as the giver did- to write out a note. Think on it for next time....

I always say thank you and acknowledge a gift or something done for me, but it might be an email, a text, a phone call of a thank you card. The concept of saying thank you never goes out of style.

I don't usually get help that requires more than a verbal thank you. Plus I have terrible hand writing.
